meet emily & meritt

August 07, 2011  |   column: WHAT'S NEW

let’s start at the beginning—tell us a little

bit about yourselves.

we’ve been working together for 12 years—and we’ve been fans of kate spade new york for a very long time!

you worked together as stylists, then launched the wildly successful denim line current/elliott. what made you decide to try your luck at handbags?

accessories have always challenged and inspired us, so we were delighted at the opportunity to create our dream adventure collection with such an iconic brand.

your style has a decidedly west coast vibe.

what attracted you to kate spade new york?

our approach to every project always has a very casual and whimsical spirit. we have an affinity for classic americana and iconic american brands. kate spade new york is one of those admired american institutions!

who approached who—how did this

adventure get started?

we were mutually inspired by each other… and learned that we had been admiring [the other brand’s work] from opposite coasts. the collaboration was a splendid, unlikely match up and meeting and working with deborah lloyd was both a dream and an honor.

logistically, how did it work out designing

a collection with teams on each coast?

frequent flyer miles!

where did you turn for inspiration

when designing the collection?

creatively, we were inspired by vintage luggage, travel cases, old locks, doctor bags, school satchels, dopp kits and a traveling dustbowl circus troop. for functionality, we considered our needs as multi-faceted career women. we were also inspired by the red carpet and jet-setting lives of our celebrity clients.

do you have any funny stories to share

from the collaboration?

the day of the photo shoot was so windy, we had to eat lunch sitting on the props so they wouldn’t blow away!

emily, what’s your favorite bag?

the wanderlust satchel in navy.

the curiosities satchel in dark roast!

you work with several of hollywood’s who’s who. will we see any of the starlets sporting westward bags this year?

you bet! our clients have been clamoring for the bags for months.
