last friday at nyfw, we brought our spring 2016 color palette to life through 30,000 blooms—tulips, hydrangeas, roses and gerbera daisies—strewn in and amongst our models, like a display of bouquets at the most beautiful neighborhood deli. for two hours, we invited everyone who attended to take their pick as they wove though the space, and we wrapped their selects up into beautiful bouquets in traditional paper tied with grosgrain ribbon for them to take home.
then we took to the streets of manhattan in a flower delivery truck and gave bouquets out to everyone we met…till they were all gone.
in collaborating with our friends at FTD to bring so many flowers to life, we got to meet their lead floral designer, andrea ancel. and we’d love you to get to know her too. scroll down…
how i work:
“there’s an element of curation in everything we do at FTD and it always starts with color. then, we make sure we’re incorporating different dimensions to the flowers, whether it’s in the variety of colors, complementing scents or textures—things that bring an artful design to the project. in this instance, we wanted to highlight the crisp colors, graphic prints and playful sophistication that are the hallmarks of kate spade new york.”
favorite thing about my job:
“i’ve been a florist for over 20 years and i still love seeing the seasons change through the flowers we work with. as we transition from summer into fall, for example, we’re incorporating large, bright and beautiful sunflowers in our bouquets.”
a trick of the trade:
“play with color and also the shapes and sizes of the blooms.”
some practical tips:
“cut your stems diagonally so the flowers can hydrate as much as possible.”
“clean your water and cut the stems every day. this keeps the flowers fresh (nobody likes murky water!) and the bouquet bacteria-free.”
“keep your blooms out of direct sunlight for the longest-lasting flowers.”
my favorite thing about springtime:
“i live in chicago, so i love seeing the first sign of flowers and green buds popping up around the city and seeing nature come to life as spring approaches. it tells me i survived another chicago winter!”
thanks andrea and FTD!
